In order to access the chat rooms, you do need an AOL screen name. AOL does offer free accounts at their website.
You can use either the All in One software ( I call it the regular software) or the Desktop software. I have used both. There is supposed to be a way to access AOL chat rooms using an AIM screen name. I have not yet been able to figure out how to do that.
